Towards More Equitable and Sustainable Markets for Food and Agriculture: Advancing Agenda 2030 in the G-20, WTO and FTAs

The aim of the meeting is to create a space for international policy-makers, negotiators, farm groups and other policy actors to explore the extent to which the G-20 process, WTO negotiations and the emerging architecture of preferential trade agreements could allow governments to achieve progress towards SDG2, by improving the policies and global rules that govern markets for food and agriculture.

The dialogue takes place in the context of Argentina’s 2018 presidency of the G-20 group of major economies, which has established “a sustainable food future” as one of three top priorities. Following the lack of consensus outcomes on agriculture at the WTO’s eleventh ministerial conference in Buenos Aires, the G-20 process should be an opportunity for decision-makers and political leaders to revisit how best to take concrete steps towards the achievement of the SDGs, including through actions to improve the functioning of global markets for food and agriculture. At the same time, the fast-changing landscape of preferential trade negotiations is reshaping frameworks for economic integration, both within the Latin American region and beyond. As climate change creates new challenges for economic actors, governments will need to take decisive and coherent collaborative action on trade and markets for food and agriculture in order to transform the bold vision of Agenda 2030 into reality.

This event is by invitation only.

The context setting is done by Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz, Chief Executive of ICTSD.
