Argentina is one of the largest exporters of agricultural goods and its policies have significant implications for global food security and agriculture markets. This study analyses the extent to which Argentina’s farm trade policies help to address economic, social and environmental objectives, including those relating to areas such as food security, poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and climate change. The study proposes a new vision for the Argentine agro-industrial sector, based on farm trade policies aimed at promoting growth in production and exports, stimulating investment and technological innovation and the sustainable management of natural resources. FOREWORD Trade policy, and agricultural trade policy in particular, has an important contribution to make in addressing sustainable development challenges – as has been acknowledged repeatedly in the statements and proposals made by governments at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In particular, carefully designed agricultural trade policies can contribute towards ensuring that economic growth occurs in a sustainable and equitable manner, and can help overcome food insecurity and poverty, especially in rural areas.
